Floods, bombs, prime ministers and the imminent end of public smoking

Well, you can’t exactly complain about the lack of news this week, can you? In fact, with the coverage given to floods, bombs, prime ministers and the imminent end of public smoking, there’s a distinct air of frazzlement attacking the edges of our newscasters as they stir the cauldron, rather like Macbeth’s witches on a busy day.

None of them are trivial matters, even for us Brits who tend to laugh our way through troublesome times.

“I dunno, Dolly,” I said. “Why can’t they all settle down and enjoy nice quiet little Carnation milk lives like you and me?”

She rolled ponderously over onto her back and regarded me solemnly, as if to say, “Tickle my tummy, why don’t you?”

So I did.
