Hero in my dreams

Friday October 5, 2007

They gave me a ‘health survey’ form to fill in when I went for my annual ‘flu jab yesterday. They gave me a pen, too, which was cool. Trouble is they forgot to warn me so I didn’t have my reading specs with me.

Goodness knows what I wrote on that harmless piece of paper because I’m sure I don’t. I did my best but I’m expecting a call to the ante-natal clinic any day now.

Thence to the post office, getting lost in the rabbit warren of streets that gird the centre of Bridgwater like a mystic maze. For once however this turned to my advantage because I found a disabled parking space, saving 90p on the fee for the multi-storey.  It’s getting pricey now, motoring. The price of petrol has edged over the £1 per litre mark, and there’s precious little in the way of free parking left.  I’d wondered if the postal strike would have closed the post office but no, it was functioning normally and the guy on the counter said he doubted if my little packet would be delayed too much, if at all.

It seemed a waste to be in town without visiting Costa Coffee, especially since it was brunch time for me, and the pannini display looked so tempting. It’s a odd thing but I’ll cheerfully blow a fiver on coffee and a bun when I’m so mean over paying pence for parking.

It could be that this was the first day of a St Luke’s Little Summer so I took my walk through Bridgwater on what had turned out to be a lovely sunny day, warm enough for my t-shirt to be more than adequate. They say that a true Little Summer signals a harsh winter. We shall see.

There were butterflies about today, too, to lift the eyes to the sky. I noted several yellows, and a full-coloured red admiral. Oh but that’s a joy. There’s precious little other than the sun for them to feed on, sadly, so I suspect they’ll be looking for winter quarters now and the days will be left to errant moths and to me.

In the evening, I, Claudius. Now that I’m over the first episode I shall continue through the entire series, chances are.  It’s still a delight to watch after all these years.

Then to bed where I had strange dreams, most likely the result of the ‘flu jab.  This time I’d taken to rod and line fishing from the back door in the river that flowed right outside.  I caught several large fish and then, unaccountably, a monstrous carp which grew legs and scuttled into the dark space behind the range. Dolly the Mega-cat came to my rescue and dragged the pesky thing out even though it was considerably larger than she.  I woke before learning if we’d eaten the beast. It would have made good eating.

And then, at about 1:30 a.m., the phone rang and Graham and I exchanged our news of the day briefly before saying goodnight. I turned over, gave Dolly the tummy tickle Graham had sent, and slept through with nary a murmur of a dream or the tickle of a bladder to trouble me.

Quite an adventurous day, really, tackling Bridgwater, catching a giant fish and being rescued by a giant cat. Odd, though, that she’s such a hero, even in my dreams.

Dolly your saviour, good cat :)

It is such a beautiful day again today – I do hope it doesn’t herald a bad winter, I’m so afraid of slipping on ice!

Oh, me too, Alison; ice is bad! I’m having to wait in for a parcel today and I’m not too happy about it. Such a shame to have to waste a lovely sunny day.

The sun has got real warmth in it, but it was very cold first thing today. Hope your parcel turns up soon so you can have a potter down the road.

‘Potter down the road’, that’s me! Oh, you meant a little walk…
‘Little summer’ is a cute expression, we say ‘Indian summer’, but I usually think that Indian summer has to follow a cold stretch–and we havn’t had any cold yet, and living here in the far north of the US (far enough anyway) we have had 80s for awhile and still predict 80s ahead. As for harsh winter, last year we had warm all the way through Christmas up till February, and I mean warm, and a tiny little winter thereafter.
I love it warm and not snowy, but it is a little freaky.

Dolly IS a hero and saviour, coming gladly to your rescue when you happen you to in the doldrums…. :-)

It is lovely here in the mornings. Around 68 degrees but by noon the ac is back on.

Funny you remember the details of your dreams. I only remember bits and pieces. Plus have that sense of strange when I get up. :-)

It seems perfectly logical to me that if a big fish tried to run at large in the house that Dolly would yank it out and dispatch it forthwith. I’m not entirely sure it would be in a condition to eat, though, after she’d given it the thorough trouncing it deserved.

Beware of extremely large carp with legs, unless, of course, Dolly is lurking somewhere close by. John, this is one of your funniest yet, and that is saying a lot! And lucky you, to remember such an entertaining dream. My sympathies, though, on not having your specs when they asked you to fill in a questionnaire. Ouch! Good luck! and here’s hoping they don’t decide you have some rare and strange disease known only to travelers in misbegotten places they shouldn’t have ever been. However, should you wind up in a maternity ward, be sure to let us know so we can send congrats and maybe a pair of bootees.

Last night I watched a Doctor Who and who should appear but Claudius himself. Derek Jacobi made a wonderful… but I won’t spoil it if it hasn’t been seen by others yet.

St Luke’s Little Summer… If we are still blessed with mild weather on Oct. 18th I shall certainly call it St Luke’s Little Summer.

I concur with Gary that Indian Summer must follow a spell of cold weather. In fact, I tend to follow those who say Indian Summer means a period of mild weather that occurs after the first frost of a season.

Righto, Jim, that’s the way to define it.

    Thank you.
    Carp make wonderful fish soup.

I just watched the first of a new BBC TV series — The Tudors. I thought it was rather poor.

So, to compensate, I’m just about to have my supper of roast chicken pieces, coleslaw, and a decent Ozzie semillon chardonnay. Well, you do have to indulge yourself sometimes.

The parcel did not come. ParcelForce. Grrrr !

I taped the Tudors – is it not worth watching then?

Depends what the alternative may be, Alison. I found it a little too predictable. The sets are good, though.
