Gulp

Saturday November 3, 2007

Dolly and I spent a happy couple of hours in Cicely, Alaska, yesterday evening, me flopped on my floor cushions, bottle and glass to hand, and Dolly on the padded footstool to my right, stretched out for the purposes of cuddling and frequent tummy-scritching.

We were both of us determined to ignore the heavens-shattering noise of fireworks outside. Worked quite well, too, even though the stink of burnt cordite hung heavy on the misty air when we went into the garden for a late evening stretch and slightly cough-generating breath of air.

I drank far too much of my bottle of good cheap French plonk. Not enough to be unsteady on my legs but certainly enough to spoil the taste of my dinner. There’s some left in the bottle, but not much.

And then I took myself off to bed, waking at 01:45 when Graham called to say goodnight.

My hangover this morning was short lived and not as severe as I deserved. One big mug of coffee and a quick turn around the garden and I’m bouncing again. Doesn’t take much to restore my bounce these days, for which I’m grateful.

I’m grateful, too, that my new disabled driver’s badge came in the post yesterday. Another three years of privileged and mostly free parking. Most importantly another three years of being able to park really close by the supermarket doors on my bad days.

And now I need to pitch in to a day filled with laundry and house-cleaning. Get that done, and a little shopping tomorrow morning, and it’ll be time to go fetch Graham back for another week of fun and games.

Before he left on bar duty yesterday he came into the study bearing an estate agent’s glossy flier:

Estate agent’s flier
Property Wanted!
Thinking of Selling?
Call NOW!

“Put this somewhere safe,” he said. “We’ll need it in a couple of weeks.”

“You’re kidding me.”

“Well, alright, three or four weeks. No longer, though.”

“Gulp.”

Dear me, I have been asleep too long. It doesn’t seem that you have time to unpack from the last move. Where to this time?

Can’t answer that one directly in public just yet, Robyn!

Woo! The adventure begins. So — are you going to share real estate urls so we can look at the houses you two look at like you did last time? That’s half the fun. I have my blue pencil in hand, all ready to check ‘em off!

I shall remember to do that, Dee. Sharing the fun makes it more fun for us, too!

Where does the megacat want to go?

Good question, Gary. I shall put it to her when she wakes up from her morning nap.

Gulp, indeed. But when Graham is in charge of a project and sets a timetable, we all know by now to clear the decks and watch out. This is going to be an adventure of the rollicking kind, I suspect.

How well you know us, Wendy!

Good heavens 3-4 weeks I’d have to start lining up packing boxes now!

Graham tells me we still have them from last time, Bonnie!

    gulp and eek!

On the cleaning front – we’re having similar Saturdays. Mind you though, I reckon you’ll be done before me :(

Nope. You’re going to beat me this time, Lou. I spoke to Graham on the phone and he said I sounded tired and weary. “F*** the cleaning,” he said. “Go and have a nap.”

    Gulp indeed.

The fireworks.. I live in the USA, what was the occasion?

I doubt that many people here really know that, Marty — it’s just an autumn evening bonfire kind of thing. Except. It’s the annual celebration of the horrid judicial murder of Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators. ‘Guy Fawkes Night.’ ‘Remember, remember the 5th of November / Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.’ It tends to run over several nights these days.

Oh yes, please share the real estate urls – or at least the pictures! And don’t forget to take us (the circle of friends) along! Don’t put us far away in some box to be unearthed with the last batch – once you moved, we want to be right there with you, Graham and the Mega-Cat!

    Hugs from Hamburg, Satalya

Oh, I’ll keep the laptop and the camera clicking, Satalya… never fear! Seems to get easier to stay in touch each time we move; this time I can plug in to any wifi hotspot, using my present ISP service. And there are lots of them. :D I wouldn’t mind betting that Graham vetoes detailed pictures of the next house until we’ve exchanged contracts, though.

So any excuse for fireworks, they’ll celebrate it on the 2nd as well as on the 5th?

Come to think of it, I can recall a business trip that had me spending a week and a half in the U.K. (Basingstoke, Hampshire) found me heading back to the U.S. on a Saturday morning and there were big banners up in Basingstoke about a Guy Fawkes fireworks display which my not entirely reliable memory (after 11 years) tells me was to be held that night — November 2nd rather than on the 5th itself — and I was annoyed that I was going to miss it.

They were still celebrating this year’s bang-fest last night, Jim. Dolly and I took refuge in Alaska once more.

Three or four weeks. That will pass quickly. While we aren’t exactly moving, in three or four weeks we hope to be back in the USA for a bit, and one our chores will be looking for a vacation/retreat home in Florida. We have our eyes on a couple places. Good investment places too. It will be fun looking and following your progress too. Good luck, John.

And good luck to you and Rick, Tim! If you’re spending Euros rather than USDs you ought to be able to pick up a real bargain!
