Fortitude and application

Naughty day yesterday. I dropped Graham off at the station and called in at the supermarket on the way home. There, the aroma of fresh rotisserie roasted chicken assailed me, and won. I grabbed coleslaw and a small pack of mini-pastries (just in case I got peckish later), came home, and sat down to the table where I ate chicken in Henry Fifth style–all fingers and savagery.

I offered Dolly a nice piece, of course, which she sniffed and declined.

Then, tummy comfortably full, I sipped my glass of wine while beaming, all paternal and superior-like, at the TV news. And then I took myself off for a long, long afternoon nap.

Early evening I settled down with the rest of my wine and a few sensible nibbles to watch our new DVD of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.  About ten minutes in I sighed, stopped the player, and slipped the disc back into its cover. It’s rubbish. Being fair, I was not taken with the book, and didn’t finish that, either. I think my enchantment with Harry Potter is done.  Sad, that, like losing touch with the magic of the inner child or something. Not that my inner child would have had anything to do with Harry Potter. Smug little s***, is Harry Potter.

Watched a shallow documentary on Byzantine art and architecture, then back to bed, tucked up for a good, solid night’s sleep. I drifted away thinking of Graham slogging away at the bar in Bristol.

A naughty day? Well, alright, yes it was. A self-indulgent day? Perhaps. But then, today, I have to go to the dentist and for my twice a year blood test, so I’ll treat it as a reward in advance for my undoubted fortitude and application.
