When we moved into this house there wasn’t a suitable place in the kitchen for our clothes dryer so we had the removal men put it up in the second bedroom, on the top floor, pending a decision on where and how to house it. We don’t believe in rushing these things.
Today the decision was finally made and implemented as Graham removed a single cabinet in the kitchen, put in a new electrical socket and then, with much grunting and groaning, all of it fully justified, schlepped the dryer down to its new home.
“Can I help?” I asked.
“No. Just keep out of the way and have a mug of tea ready when I’ve done.”
It was ready and waiting. Goes without saying, does that.
“Would you like to go out for lunch as a reward?” I asked.
“No. I think we’ve done enough for today. I’ll put my feet up and read my book if you don’t mind.”
“Thanks for the ‘we’. You’ve earned a bit of a rest after that job.”
Didn’t last, of course. After lunch and a little siesta I found him sorting stuff from his cupboards and shelves into two heaps, one giant one for the civic recycling centre and one much smaller one for packing back neatly onto the small shelving units gained from the IKEA trip. His present large shelving unit will be magically transformed into a bed in the next couple of days and the second bedroom transformed into a nice bedroom with a smart study corner.
In fits and starts, and not at all slowly, the house is being changed over and doctored ready for the sale. If the agent doesn’t describe it as ’superbly presented’ I shall hit him, hard, with a sharp brick.

Oooh, exciting stuff, John. I look forward to hearing more about the house sale, being a bit of a property geek myself. Do you still have that gallery with photos of your various houses over the years? I can’t seem to find it…

Bonnie: Yes, it’s all still up on the old site.

John, I didn’t realise you are moving… I am surprised by how much I am concerned that you will no longer have that lovely window with that beautiful grey-green view. I stop by regularly just to look through your window. Do tell me you will have such a lovely view in your next place…

John, if the agent doesn’t describe it as “superbly presented,” may the rest of us have what’s left after the presentation of the brick?

the view at the next house should be stupendous, as it sounds like a seaside cottage, right?

Seaside if we can afford it, Gary, otherwise a few miles inland from the coast.
Strawberry: The window picture in my header is in fact taken from a Welsh cottage overlooking the garden. I’m hoping for one very similar in the next place…

Just imagine the balance that would be returned to the world if everyone had a window like that to peer through?

“Seaside cottage”
There was a story going around in Narragansett, Rhode Island a couple of years ago about an elderly gentleman storming into the town hall to complain about his tax assessment.
“You say my home is worth $850,000. That’s nonsense. I bought that place more than thirty years ago and have never really modernized anything. It is a small old seaside cottage. One bathroom. Two small bedrooms. No garage. It can’t be worth more than fity thousand dollars, not eight hundred and fifty thousand!”
The tax assessor nodded in agreement. “You are absolutely correct, sir. You do have a fifty thousand dollar house. However, it is sitting on an eight hundred thousand dollar piece of land.”

Rick is a lot like Graham. Tasks I find daunting are taken in stride. Whereas I am not all that handy, Rick, like Graham, just seems to know how to do whatever needs doing. It’s so nice to have a man around the house.
