We’ll see about that

Wednesday October 20, 2004

“I’m on the train, and it’s on time.”

“Yippee! Yippee! Yippee!”

“That’s nice.”

“Well,” I said. “It’s the best news I’ve had in almost four weeks.”

“That’s nice, too. Enjoy your day and I’ll see you this afternoon.”

Some five and a half hours later we met on the stairs at Boston railway station, exchanged a continental greeting, ignored the glare from the ubiquitous blue-rinse lady of advanced years, and stepped back to regard one another.

“You’ve lost weight,” said Graham, accusingly.

“So have you. What’s your excuse?”

“Haven’t got one.”

“It doesn’t matter. We’ll soon put it to rights.”

Later in the evening, Graham pushed his plate back, emptied of a generous helping of sausage toad-in-the-hole, and sighed contentedly.

“That was yummy.”

“Good. Dessert?”

“What is it?”

“Plum yoghurt.”

“Oh, I think I can find room for that.”

“Quite right, too. Can’t be doing with this weight loss rubbish.”

“We’ll see about that.”
