“Do we need to go out today?” Graham asked.
“Good, because I’d really like to get stuck in to the last of the wallpapering.”
“Suits me. Shopping on the second Saturday before Christmas is not the best way to spend the second Saturday before Christmas.”
“So what is the best way?”
“Depends who we’re talking about.”
“Well, us, of course.”
“Ah. In that case, your best way is to spend the day getting stuck in to the last of the wallpapering.”
“And what shall you do?”
“Can’t spend money when you’re dozing.”
“I’ll wake you in good time for lunch.”
“You do that.”
The house settled down quietly to the sounds of wallpapering, snoozing, and the purring of cats. Outside, the weather settled down just as quietly to being dull, overcast and uninviting.
And that was my day, really. Comfortable, cozy, surrounded by the quiet of a happy home, each of its inhabitants doing what they like doing best. You’d have to look darn hard to find a better way to spend the second Saturday before Christmas, I reckon.
Ah, there you are…
